FM 6050 Standard For Storage Cabinets

Flammable and combustible chemical safety cabinets are key furniture requirements in any laboratory. One of the essential aspects is the necessary compliance standards to ensure that they contribute to the safety of the lab personnel.

The FM Approvals certification mark is intended to verify that the products and services described will meet FM Approvals’ stated conditions of performance, safety, and quality useful to the ends of property conservation.

Particularly, the FM 6050 standard sets performance and construction requirements for cabinets designed to provide a safe, secure storage area for flammable and combustible liquids.

For obtaining FM Approval, broadly the following requirements of the Standard are tested and checked.

General Requirements Performance Requirements
Maximum capacity of the storage cabinets Loading to withstand the maximum storage capacity
Construction requirements pertaining to:

  • Thickness and gap, 
  • Seams and joints
  • Doors
  • Leak-tight spill containment sump or pan
  • Vents and flame arresters
Ability to withstand exposure to fire in accordance with the ASTM E 152-time temperature curve
Markings & labels Flame arresters complying with the requirements stated by the standard
Manufacturer’s Installation and Operation Instructions Cabinets equipped with self-closing doors shall close and latch properly during and after a cycling test.
Calibration The mechanism for holding the doors in the open position shall release properly when subjected to the heat release test.
The spill containment sump or pan shall be at least 2 in. (51 mm) deep and shall be leak-tight.
