Types of Emergency Equipment for Laboratories

No matter how much protection we put in place, we can never assure 100% protection from laboratory hazards no matter how hard we try. This is exactly why every laboratory is mandated to implement certain safety/ emergency equipment that can be used in the case of accidents in the laboratory.

Types Key Pointers
Emergency Showers
  • Important for users who come into contact with hazardous chemicals
  • User must remove the PPE and then run the affected parts under water – avoiding serious injury
  • Must be available within 10 seconds of contamination
  • Can be floor mount, wall mount or ceiling mount
  • Compliance: ANSI Z358.1; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 
Emergency Eyewash
  • Important for users who get contaminants into their eyes
  • Potential for serious injury – chemical burns, blindness, and permanent damage
  • Multiple eyewash areas must be present throughout the laboratory 
  • Only available as a worksurface mount
  • Compliance: ANSI Z358.1; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Refers to clothing or accessories that are used to protect the user from hazardous contaminants
  • Useful for those who work in chemical or biological laboratories
  • Prevents any serious damage or illness
  • Examples – safety goggles, PPE suit, gloves, rubber shoes, lab coats, fire blankets
Spill kits/ First aid kits
  • Spill kits comprises materials specifically used to clean up hazardous chemical or biological specimens
  • They’re specific to the type of spill – flammable solvents, acids, radioactive material, biological specimens, etc.
  • They also comprise gloves, goggles and respirators
  • First aid kits are meant for treating any physical injury the user gets while working
  • They comprise antiseptics, ointments, gauze, tape, cotton, etc.
