Lab Facility Certification Considerations – BSL labs<\/span><\/h1>[vc_column_text]Biosafety laboratories are a key component of any infectious disease laboratory, and the pandemic has only reiterated it. It\u2019s very important to ensure that all the compliance standards are being met prior to the designing of the laboratory. It reduces the possibility of approval or rejection and provides a streamlined structure to the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pre-Design considerations<\/span><\/td>\n\n

  • Site Selection & Risk determination must be done prior<\/span><\/li>\n
  • It should be in a secluded location with 3-tier security system<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Site plan should include everything from design to equipment placement, to emergency service placement<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Code of practice: Biohazard sign, Person-in-charge, Availability of PPE, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Laboratory Design<\/span><\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • Must be in an isolated place, or at least separated from the main building<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Doors must be locked in such a way that only one can open at a time<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Surfaces must be water resistant & break resistant<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Rooms must be sealable for decontamination<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Hand washing & air filtration systems must be placed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Laboratory Equipment<\/span><\/td>\n\n

  • Equipment that handles or produces infectious aerosols must have their exhaust air filtered by HEPA filters<\/span><\/li>\n
  • All equipment must be regularly decontaminated<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Equipment that requires additional accessories must be stored in separate containment boxes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They will also need to be placed where additional exhaust options can be fit in<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Emergency Services<\/span><\/td>\n\n

  • Health & Medical surveillance \u2013 Medical history of personnel is mandatory along with regular clinical evaluation<\/span><\/li>\n
  • SOPs must be prepared for any mishaps. E.g. infectious material leak, injury to personnel, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Fire & Natural disaster \u2013 Fire detection & dampening systems must be installed along with leak-proof boxes so that hazardous material can be stored away<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
